With the hope of initiating debate in order to gain a deeper understanding of Afro Latinos and to further disseminate this understanding, the CanAfro team proposes the following questions about Afro Latinos:

1) Referring to  the term "Afro-latino", Afro-Venezuelan, Afro-Peruvian,Afro-Colombian, etc. How do Latin Americans feel about these labels? Are they creating divisions in the societies? Or are they necessary distinctions to be able to focus on the proven correlations between ethnicity and poverty, socio-economic determinants of health, education etc, and be able to fine-tine programs and policies to engender positive change?

2) Which is the main goal of Afro Latinos in the Americas, are all Afro Latinos in the different countries of Latin America pursuing goals in the same priority or are there differences by country? And if so, if the necessities are different, to they still feel the need to cooperate with each other in order to further advance their local initiatives?

3) In the specific case of Afro Colombians, one of the major aims of their campaign is to gain control over a specific territory in order to be able to maintain their cultural identities and  their ancestral traditions and to be able to have autonomy over the decisions which influence their future. This claim seems to imply that their values and traditions are different from the traditions and values of the mainstream society. Do they want to be able to participate more in the mainstream political and economical system of the country or do they want to coexist within that system but maintaining an alternative political and economic system within their territories. And if this is their aim, which should be the first step towards that goal?

Con la esperanza de iniciar el debate acerca de los Afrolatinos y de entender mejor sus posiciones con el fin de propagar esa información, el equipo de Can Afro se ve interesado en hacer las siguientes preguntas:

1) Al usar el término: Afro-latino", Afro-Venezolano, Afro-Peruano,Afro-Colombiano, etc. Como se sienten los Latino Americanos acerca de estos términos? Están creando divisiones en las sociedades?  O es necesario hacer estas distinciones con el fin de enfatizar las correlaciones comprobadas entre: etnicidad y pobreza, determinantes socio económicos de salud, etc, y así poder lograr  programas y políticas que creen un cambio positivo?

2)Cual es el principal o más urgente objetivo de los Afro Latinos en Latino América? Es el mismo para todas las comunidades de los diferentes países o cambia de acuerdo al país. Si este es el caso, (que las prioridades cambien de acuerdo al país), sienten que es necesario unirse con las otras comunidades Afro Latinas para poder lograr cambios locales?

3) En el caso específico de los Afro Colombianos, uno de los principales objetivos de su agenda es ganar el control sobre un territorio específico con el propósito de poder mantener sus identidades culturales y sus tradiciones ancestrales y tener la capacidad de tener autonomía sobre las decisiones que influencien su futuro. Este objetivo denota que los valores y las tradiciones son diferentes de las tradiciones y los valores de la sociedad en general. La pregunta sería si ellos quisieran participar en los sistemas políticos y económicos del país o quieren coexistir dentro de ese sistema pero manteniendo un sistema político y económico alternativo dentro de sus territorios. Si este es su objetivo? Cual creen que es el primer paso en lograr ese objetivo?
